UNIVERSITY OF THE AMERICAS PUEBLA






The University is located in the Metropolitan area of Puebla, in Cholula, a city rich in ancient traditions, an important archaeological site.

The University has its historical antecedent in the "Mexico City College, founded in 1940, its first rector was Dr. Henry L. Cain.

The first 12 graduate students made it in 1944. UDLAP in 1959 was accepted as a member of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) from United States.

The campus was built and donated by the Mary Street Jenkins Foundation in 1967, on the grounds of the Ex-Hacienda Santa Catarina Martir, which dates from the eighteenth century.

In 1976, the UDLAP received from the federal Secretariat of Public Education its the registration of their curricula. In 1985 the Foundation was formally established as the University of the Americas Puebla.

UDLAP Today the university is a particularly broad national and international prestige, with over eight thousand students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate.

The 1940s

1940
The Universidad de las Américas was founded in Mexico’s capital as the Mexico City College, a two-year university by Dr. Henry L. Cain, superintendent of the Colegio Americano Foundation, and Dr. Paul V. Murray, principal of the Colegio Americano High School. Dr. Cain was the college’s first president.


1944
Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees were conferred on 12 students at a graduation ceremony at the Colegio Americano Foundation Auditorium.

1946
The U.S. Veterans Administration included the Mexico City College on its list of approved schools, enabling veterans to study there with U.S. government funding. The college changed its semester system to a quarter system.

1947
The Graduate School was founded and Dr. Lorna L. Stafford and Dr. José Gaos were appointed co-deans. Twenty-one students graduated with four-year bachelor’s degrees.

The 1950s

1950
The first issue of Mesoamerican Notes was published, edited by Robert Barlow. The college became a civic association.

1951
The college was accepted as a member of the Texas Association of Colleges as an overseas member.

1953
Dr. Paul V. Murray was appointed as the college’s second president.

1954
The college moved to its new campus located at Kilometer 16 of the Mexico-Toluca Highway. Collegian, the student newspaper, took first place in the All-American Rating.

1959
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accepted the college as a member.

The 1960s

1962
Dr. Ray D. Lindley became the college’s third president.

1963
The college changed its name to University of the Americas and was reorganized into three different schools: the School of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School and the Mexico City College.

1967
The Mary Street Jenkins Foundation, together with the U.S. government’s Agency for International Development (AID), provided substantial funding to the university so it could create a new campus in the state of Puebla.

1968
The university changed its name legally to Universidad de las Américas, A.C. and was accredited by the Puebla State Board of Education. Construction began on the new campus at the Ex-hacienda de Santa Catarina Mártir, in the municipality of San Andrés Cholula. Engineering classes began in Puebla’s Colegio Americano building.

The 1970s

1970
The university moved to its new campus in the state of Puebla.

1971
Dr. Richard Rubotton was named fourth president and Dr. Ray Lindley the university’s first chancellor. The Technological Institute was created to offer a “Bachelor of Science” degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and electronic engineering.

1973
The council named Dr. Byron K Trippet as interim president, the institution’s fifth.
1975
Dr. Fernando Macías Rendón became the sixth president and began an important stage of Mexicanization by substantially increasing the number of students from all over the country.

1976
The university’s curricula were registered by the federal Department of Public Education’s General Office of Professions.

1978
The Center for University Studies was established in Mexico City and the School of Economic-Administrative Sciences was created. The School of Science and the Humanities changed its name to the School of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The 1980s

1981
The Technological Institute became the School of Engineering.

1985
Demetrio Bolaños Guillén became the university’s seventh president. The civic association’s board decided it should become a separate entity and the Fundación Universidad de las Américas Puebla was constituted, headquartered at the Cholula campus. Dr. Enrique Cárdenas was named interim president.

1986
With funding from the Mary Street Jenkins Foundation, an ambitious program of academic and institutional development began, along with the renovation of the physical installations and laboratories. The Institute for Advanced Studies was born and the new University Council took office, ratifying Dr. Enrique Cárdenas as the university’s eighth president.

1987
The university initiated a permanent student recruiting campaign nationwide and an effort to find donations and financial support to sustain its development. Academic programs multiplied and the professional refresher course program was launched.

1988
An important project in the sphere of sciences and the humanities began. To facilitate it, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities was divided into two independent entities: the School of Social Sciences and the School of Humanities. Research, dissemination and consulting services were strengthened and broadened out. SACS renewed its accreditation.

1989
For the first time in its history, the university enrolled more than 5,000 students and became part of basic science studies in Mexico by opening the School of Sciences.

The 1990s

1990
The Science Building was inaugurated. Dr. Enrique Cárdenas was ratified as president for a term of five years. New student dorms and faculty housing were built. An important project to promote and develop artistic and cultural activities began. The university celebrated its 50th anniversary, renewing its commitment to quality in all spheres.

1992
Graduate programs were given enormous impetus. Construction began on the School of Humanities Building. The lab building was inaugurated. More houses were given to faculty members.

1993
Changes and improvements were made to campus facilities and services. Undergraduate enrollment reached 6,000.

1994
The university’s voicemail and data networks were completed, connecting the entire community efficiently. The University Council ratified Dr. Enrique Cárdenas as president for another five-year term. The SACS accredited UDLA, subject to compliance with certain conditions.

1995
The School of Humanities Building was finished and inaugurated. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees were conferred on 819 students, the largest number to that date.

1997
The Library Building was re-inaugurated, integrating a new concept of digital access.

1998
Representatives of the University Colleges were named. After remodeling, the Schools of Business and Social Sciences Buildings were re-inaugurated. In its annual meeting, the SACS granted UDLA accreditation with no conditions.

1999
The Deanship of University Colleges, whose aim was to design, develop and consolidate a system of living and learning communities, was changed to the Vice Presidency for Student Affairs, taking on a broader, more pro-active role in the administration of student life on campus.

A New Millennium

2001
The first two doctoral programs were launched in economics and computer systems. Dr. Enrique Cárdenas resigned as president of the Universidad de las Américas Puebla and a President Selection Committee was created. After evaluating the four finalists, the University Council unanimously decided to approve the proposal of Dr. Nora Lustig as the new president. The recommendation was approved by the UDLA Foundation Board of Trustees. On September 28, Dr. Lustig was sworn in as the ninth president of the Universidad de las Américas Puebla before the entire university community.

2002
The Boards of Trustees of the Mary Street Jenkins Foundation and the Fundación Universidad de las Américas Puebla renewed their membership on November 22. The Institute for Public Policies and Development Studies (IPD) and the Center for Regional Development were inaugurated. The Cultural Council was reinstated. The School of Humanities changed its name to the School of Arts and Humanities. Work was begun on designing a long-term Strategic Plan and the Plan for Ordering Space, as well as important reforms to administrative processes. Support for academics increased offering a lighter workload for professors who are members of the National System of Researchers and teaching incentives for laboratory and part-time professors. The position of professor-representative was created for each of the five schools, and the first elections were held for the new post.

2003
The Board of Trustees approved the creation of a new auxiliary structure, the “Auditing, Finance and Investment Committee, known as the CAFI, to act as a consulting body to the Office of the President about important economic or property administration matters. At its May 28, 2003 session, the Board of Trustees approved the creation of the University Council, the board’s consulting body for matters related to university life. Luis Regordosa Valenciana was invited to be the president of both the University Council and the CAFI. On June 9, the SACS re-accreditation process began. The Institute of Graduate Studies and Research changed its name to the Deanship of Research and Graduate Studies (DIP).

2004
In January 2004, the Fundación Universidad de las Américas Puebla was offering 39 undergraduate programs, 22 master’s programs (including 2 distance-learning programs) and two doctoral programs.

2005
Dr. Nora Lustig resigned as president of the Universidad de las Américas Puebla. The President Selection Committee was convened; after it evaluated seven candidates, by majority decision it proposed Dr. Pedro Ángel Palou as its only nominee. The proposal was unanimously accepted by the Fundación Universidad de las Américas Puebla Board of Trustees, and on June 1, Dr. Palou García was sworn in as the tenth Universidad de las Américas Puebla president.

One of the most important universities of the State, whose facilities are at the foot of Cerro de la Paz. It also has a campus outside the city of Tehuacán. Its educational offer is very wide and very competitive at the national level

The University was inaugurated on May 7, 1973 in the former ranch "La Noria", in a ceremony preceded by civil and military authorities, and members of the Standing Committee on Citizenship Poblana. The first races were offered for Business Administration and Architecture. The first rector was Mtro. Mario Iglesias García Teruel.
