The Great Pyramid of Cholula
Diagonal 4 South #707
San Pedro Cholula
Puebla,
CP: 72760
The city of Cholula is located just 12 kilometers from the state capitol, belongs to the municipality of San Pedro Cholula, whose seat is Cholula de Rivadavia. It is part of the valley of Cholula, located in the Midwest state, with an altitude of 2,220 meters above sea level. Its area is 51.03 square kilometers.
There are tracks that the site that today is the city of Cholula, was occupied for over 3000 years.
The ancient city of Chollollan was an important ceremonial center in Mesoamerica and was held for the initiation of priests from various cultures.
The name Cholula has prehistoric origins, and its inhabitants were already there for over 2500 years. This makes it to be one of the oldest cities in Mexico. Cholula is derived from the name "Chollollan" which was the name of the ancient city and means "place of escape."
At the time of the conquest, Cholula was one of the most important shopping centers of Mesoamerica, and was made up of important buildings and temples. The pyramid Tlachihualtépetl, its ceremonial center, is one of the most important of the country as its base is so broad that it surpasses all that exist, including those of Egypt. It has an approximate height of 66 meters and the square base is 450 meters per side.
It comprises seven superimposed pyramids, each covering the previous one, doing this to expand beyond its base.
Currently, the pyramid is partially covered, giving the appearance of a hill, as the last pyramid was made of earth and part of what now you can see is the core of the great pyramid.
At the top there is a Catholic church, built by the Spaniards in 1594, and is dedicated to "Virgen de los Remedios". This church is declared a historical heritage of Mexico, and this is why it has not been completed its excavation.
In the site museum, located just one side of the pyramid, you can see the history of both, the city and the pyramid, and there are exposed pre-Hispanic items found during excavations, as well as a model representing the pyramids superimposed to better understand why the appearance that it has today.
