A Stroll Around Puebla
For any tourist, the city that is reached for the first time, it is completely unknown. Arriving by car, you are not sure whether is coming from the north or south of the city, what is commonly thought is how to get the downtown and from there to elsewhere.
When coming by bus or plane, you are trying to imagine in what part of town is the terminal or airport located.
Well, the city of Puebla has many entries, the one which comes from Mexico City Highway, passes through the North, entering from the northwest and along the way to the north-east, towards to Orizaba City. The first entry in that sense, is the Boulevard “Hermanos Serdan” (Serdan Brothers), if you keep on the road, a little later you will find the second entry, which connects the exit to the state of Tlaxcala, the third exit, you can see the Cuauhtémoc Soccer Stadium, which can be seen from the Highway, is output by the Defenders of the Republic Boulevard and Highway to Tehuacan, which then leads to San Miguel Canoa, a little town that is very close to the city.
On the north-east of the city, out to Mexico by the Federal Highway that passes through the city of Cholula and Huejotzingo, a little farther south in that direction, the exit to the city of Atlixco, which also leads to Super - Siglo XXI road, towards the city of Cuernavaca in the neighboring state of Morelos. In this part there are two exits in the same direction, a federal quota and other toll free.
To the south - west, exit to Valsequillo, in which direction is the Africam Safari Park, with a distance of approximately 11 kilometers.
Finally, the Nor – west exit, heading for the city of Tehuacan Federal road no cost. Importantly, you can reach this city on Highway Mexico - Veracruz, which leads to Orizaba, but taking the detour to Oaxaca is located approximately 30 kilometers. There are very clear signals from this outlet.
What can be seen when entering the city? If we wish to know the historical and colonial city of Puebla, the best is to reach the down town, where we can admire the beautiful colonial buildings, churches and convents, which are explained about in another section, the “zócalo” this is a central park, the Municipal Palace, the Cathedral, the City Hall, and many businesses where you can buy supplies, food, crafts, indeed, the latter in the Parian market and around Analco market, that are very close.
How to settle? The downtown is like a map of coordinates, with coordinate axes, the main that runs from the east to the west, known as “Avenida de la Reforma” that is getting to the zocalo, changing its name to “Avenida Juan Palafox y Mendoza”. That is the road way. It is Crossed by the other axis, which runs from south to north, from “Avenida 16 de Septiembre”, and changing its name, to “Avenida 5 de Mayo”, pass through the down town, which is closed to traffic for several blocks from the zocalo.
The names of the streets are in ascending order from the center to the north in even numbers and names, for example, 2 North, 4 North, 6 North, and so on, the South, similarly, 3 South, 5 South, 7 South, the West, 3 West, 5 West, 7 West and finally to the East, 2 East, 4 East, 6 East and so on. All this may be better understood with the following map:

If you have enough time, you can go walking, visiting museums, churches, government buildings, shops and restaurants. There are buses that leave from the zocalo, parked on 2nd Street South, they are running by several trips, both in the historical center, to the forts of Loreto and Guadalupe. A guide person is explaining the relevant historical events. They are not expensive and it is a great way to learn about the city and its history.
For souvenirs, we recommend visiting the market of “El Parian”, where you can find all kinds of crafts such as Talavera, sweets, clothes, and on weekends, antiques in the park of "Los Sapos", and more.
The largest shopping centers are Angelopolis on Atlixco exit Highway, east of the city, Plaza Dorada, the oldest in the south west, and the convention center, whose shopping area is built on the old facilities that were eighteenth-century textile mills, where the route is very interesting and has a great family park and beautiful.
