The first university in Puebla, with four centuries of history, was founded by the Jesuit order, requested by the council of the city of New Spain on April 14th, 1578. They settled in the city on May 9 of that year.
Jesuit builds the school of the Holy Spirit in today's 4 South Street, the historic city center, with the support of the merchant in great Don Melchor de Covarrubias, the April 15th, 1587, the first rector being the father of Diego Lopez table. It is important to note that the Church of the Society of Jesus is a side, which was founded by the same order.
The king of Spain, Carlos III expelled the Jesuits from New Spain in 1767, and their properties were expropriated.
Subsequently, the building continued to be used for educational purposes, with the Colleges of San Geronimo and San Ignacio.
The former Jesuit colleges were eventually a problem for the gap in education, so that by the year 1790, Bishop Francisco Fabian y Fuero changed all of the country into one, then started the Royal College Carolino in honor of King Charles III. This name remained until 1820, when the Jesuits returned to Mexico. The first lead since the order was the licensed Mariano Jose Lezama y Camarillo.
The start of courses with the Jesuit order, began on October 2nd, 1820, and the name of Royal College of the Holy Spirit, San Geronimo and San Ignacio de la Compañía de Jesus. The Chancellor in turn is the father Ignacio María Lerdo de Tejada. On December 22nd of the same year, the Jesuits were expelled again.
After the Independence of Mexico, in 1821, the regency of the first rule allows the restoration of Imperial College under the name of Colegio de San Ignacio, San Geronimo and Holy Spirit, the father being the rector of Ignacio Gonzalez Peñuela.
During the fall of the empire and being the caretaker government, led to major changes in school because the local congress in 1825 gave the government the ultimate on-the College of the Holy Spirit, "thus becomes the State College . This is carried out the complete separation of church authorities, however, remained its guiding by priests.
During the French intervention, the school and the city felt safe with the apparent stability offered by the new government, during this period there were no changes in its structure.
Once expelled the French government after the fall of Maximilian of Hapsburg, the required changes and the school became full. Education was reorganized with a new liberal thought. Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, took office as president in early 1881 and made major changes, which lasted, until the school was transformed into a university.
The University of Puebla was legally instituted on April 4th, 1937 at the initiative of President Maximino Avila Camacho. The first Rector was Manuel L. Márquez. In 1941, under the pretext that Mexico had declared war on Germany, Italy and Japan, sought to militarize the university. Thanks to a student movement that attempt failed.
In 1956, the University achieved its independence. The course of this movement includes several pre-promoted by various groups of students and is used by the Student Federation Poblana. Thanks to student demonstrations, which were exploited by the press, is published in the Official Journal Organic Law of the Autonomous University of Puebla, on November 23rd, 1956. It contemplated the existence of an Honor Council, with powers in excess of the University Council, which would be a matter of contention between liberal and conservative academics to modify the law in 1963, when the Council of Honor disappeared.
On 1 April 1987, Members of the 50th Legislature, Carlos Barrientos de la Rosa, Guadalupe Sanchez Lozada, Miguel Castillo Guerra, Antonio Castelán Guarneros and Roberto Pozos Cuspinera, submitted to the State Congress to declare the initiative to "Meritorious University Autonomous of Puebla", which was adopted at the meeting of April 2nd, 1987, issued the decree in question. In 1991, the 51st legislature passed the Law of the Meritorious University Autonomous of Puebla, which, finally, was updated on December 10th, 1998.
